Do you have a program for that? or do you know who does? Answer: Gompers Center School provides a variety of services for children with disabilities from the age of 5 and up. At this time, we do not offer after school programs - though it may be something that we will expand into in the future. Agencies such as UCP and Civitan Foundation offer exceptional programs that may be able to assist your son. Answer: Gompers Center "loves to show off" so we are always welcome to individuals or groups that would like to see the amazing array of programs we have. Gompers Center is open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 until 5:00. To schedule a visit simply call 602-336-0061 and let the front desk know you would like a tour. They will connect you to the proper person. Posted January 4th, 2007 Question: I just heard on the news about your min.wage dilemma. I did NOT vote FOR the new min. wage. Could you possibly cut back on each individual's hours to save money and still give everyone a job? If some of the adults need a place to stay longer, perhaps they could "volunteer" the extra time. I hate to see any of them lose their job. Answer: The reprecussions of Proposition 202 are one of the most challenging issues agencies such as Gompers Center have ever faced. Gompers Center currently works under a Department of Labor Commensurate Wage Certificate which allows us to pay our trainees a "sub-minimum" wage. However, the passage of Arizona's Minimum Wage standard overrides this and means that all individuals attending any of Gompers Center's Vocational programs must be paid at $6.75/hr. This is potentially devastating for the individuals we work with because they are now at risk of losing their benefits such as Social Security and AHCCCS. Simply cutting back their hours does not solve the problem. First off, why should they have to get their hours cut because they get a raise? How would you feel about that? Secondly, many of the individuals we work with are not able to live independently. This means that either family members will have to sacrifice their jobs to remain at home, or already stretched thin group homes will now have to staff the homes during hours they are not paid to do so. Gompers believes that every individual has the right to work independently, and once they have reached a level of performance they should be allowed to make as much money as they can - whether that is $6.75 per hour or $100,000 a year! However, to negatively effect these individuals while they are working towards independent employment by risking their jobs and benefits, not only makes no sense, but also seems cruel. The only solution is for the legislature to carve out an exception allowing us to utilize the rules and regulations already in place at the Federal level. If you have any quesitons, or would like to visit Gompers Center to see the great things happening in our Vocational department, please feel free to call (602) 336-0061. Thank you for your interest in Gompers and this very challenging situation. Posted January 3rd, 2007 Question: Do you offer CPR Professional training? If so, how much do you charge and what's the next available weekend class? Answer: Gompers Center offers a wide variety of trainings. Primarily for our staff in house, we do offer these trainings to individuals from other agencies as well. Classes are ongoing all the time. I would suggest contacting our Behavior Specialist, J.C. Gayton at 602.336.0061, extension 146. Posted December 17th, 2006 Question: I don't have much experince with people with disability but my heart is big and willing to learn new things. Answer: Then you could be just the kind of person that Gompers Center is looking for. Many of our best staff had little experience working with those with disabilities. Gompers Center is looking for individuals who are caring, hard working, willing to take direction and dedicated to the individuals we serve. If you are interested in employment please feel free to stop in and fill out an application or contact our Human Resources Director, Linda Reim, at 602-336-0061, ext. 103. Posted December 2nd, 2006 Question: Do you have the facilities to train a blind child? She was blind from birth and is now 5 years old. Answer: Gompers Center works with individuals with a wide variety of disability levels, including those who have visual impairments. While Gompers Center does not have a Vision Specialist on staff, we work closely with referring school districts to provide whatever services and supports are necessary for the student to be successful. Posted November 25th, 2006 Question: I would like to know more about your school and programs. I am the Gaurdian of a special needs little girl and I seem to be running into brick walls through DDD. Thanks Answer: Gompers Center's Private Education School serves students from age 5-22. Each of our rooms has an Arizona State Certified Teacher, as well as an array of Para-professionals to assist in the educational needs of the students. However, it does not stop there. Gompers Center is also able to offer Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Recreational Therapy and Music Therapy. In addition, Gompers Center has an RN, an LPN and a Behavior Specialist. Gompers Private Education School is built around increasing educational goals as well as improving students self esteem and independence skills. Following graduation, and where appropriate, students may look towards Gompers Day Treatment and Training for Adults program as well as our Vocational program. Information on these programs can be found at www.gomperscenter.org. Posted November 5th, 2006 Question: What sorts of behavioral issues do you deal with? My brother has had verious complications since birth. He is now 20 and recently went through a very painful episode in which we now believe left him with post traumatic stess disroder. He has sudden out bursts and fits. He yells and hits and becomes very anxious. My parents tried Zoloft but that only made it worse so they are afraid to put him back on an anti-depressant. They are hessistant to put him in any social situation for fear that he may have an outbusrt and be liable for hurting another person. Do your behavioral specialist deal with people one on one? Are these behaviors something you deal with? We are unsure of what to do next. Answer: Gompers Center works with a variety of Behavioral issues. Our staff are well trained in a variety of techniques to help alleviate behavioral issues before the behaviors become self-injurious or a danger to others. To augment this, our Behavior Specialist works closely with the staff and consumers to develop plans to deal with any behavioral issues that might arise, and lay out goals to help in the reduction of them before they occur. Posted September 27th, 2006 Question: I have a 21 year old son that still lives at home. He is non-verbal, autistic and still wears a diaper. Are there any day programs available for us to look into for him? Answer: Gompers Center has two options that might be appropriate for your son: 1. Our Private Day School; 2. Our Day Treatment and Training for Adults (DTA). Both of these programs work with individuals in a wide range of ability levels. If you son is still in school, we could look at which of our 4 rooms, each with a certified Teacher, would be most appropriate and then assist him in his transition to the "adult world". If he has already graduated, our DTA program might be just what your son is looking for. Either way, please feel free to contact us at 602.336.0061 and ask for Mark. I will be happy to explain our programs further and set up a tour. Posted September 14th, 2006 Question: I have had multiple back surgeries. My present doctor has prescribed water exercises. I am on Medicare along with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Can I be accepted into your water therapy program? Answer: While you are more than welcome to visit our facility and meet with our staff to determine an appropriate course of action, at this time Gompers Center does not accept Medicare or Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance. The therapies would be on a fee for service basis. If you would like additional information please feel free to contact Cheril Chilcoat at 602.336.0061. Posted September 14th, 2006 Question: What does the name "Gompers" stand for? Answer: Gompers Center was named in memory of Samuel Gompers, who was a strong advocate for the continuing education of all ages. Please read about Our Namesake for more information. Posted November 11th, 2004 Question: What is the maximum age that a person can be in order to still receive dental treatment through your Dental program? Answer: There is no maximum age limit for a person to be eligible to receive dental treatment. For further information, please contact the dental office at 602-336-0061. Posted August 6th, 2004 |
