In the DTA Department, we
address a multitude of training and skill building,
based on the individual needs of each client. For example,
we train the in the areas of communication skills,
social skills, self-help skills, consumer skills, pre-vocational
skills and academics. There is also a strong emphasis
on physical abilities. This area covers motor skills,
physical strength, weight control, healthy eating,
oral hygiene and grooming. The curriculum also includes
weekly volunteer work in the community as well as recreational
excursions.
Individual program plans for
many of the individuals in this program also call for
their participation in pre-vocational activities that
prepares them for future placement in a vocational
program. Numerous individuals from the DTA program
graduated into Gompers' vocational programs where many
are now earning regular paychecks for the first time
in their lives.
