Welcome to Gompers Center Our Mission: To Meet the Unmet Needs of Adults and Children with Disabilities in Our Community.
Special Education

Special Education programDaily Living Skills....Have you ever wanted to say something but couldn't find the right words? The kids in our Daily Living Skills class don't have that problem. They learn to use an electronic communication device so they are never at a loss for words. A Velcro, Touch Picture Board, or PECS System may be the choice for you. The students also work on various levels of personal care to assist in preparation for daily activities and...we always make plenty of room for the 3 R's.

Functional Skills Program....In our Functional Skills Classroom your child can learn how to wash dishes, do laundry, set the table, and clean up after themselves. Not only can they use these skills at home, but also at a job site when they're older. We also work on skills to use in a "piece-time" setting so they can work outside the home as adults. Hand in hand with these skills, Community-Based Instruction outings are scheduled on a weekly basis. We work on social skills, exchanging money for goods, and adapting to varied environments.

Sensory-Based Classroom....All kids like to play, smile, and laugh. When kids need a lot of help to play and a lot of close supervision, they are enrolled in the Sensory-Based Classroom. In this program, students work on tolerance to different types of touch, sound, smell, and even taste. Some who are very sensitive to light or sound experience our Sensory Room where their environment is transformed into a Science Museum or an underwater chasm!

The enrollment process is very simple. Once your child is referred to Gompers by the home School District, a Placement Meeting is scheduled. The usual participants are a district representative, a Gompers representative, you, and your child. Papers are signed, transportation is arranged, and the first day of attendance is scheduled!
