GOMPERS VOCATIONAL PROGRAM 

Gompers Habilitation Center offers one of the finest vocational training programs in the state of Arizona. In our new 21,000 square foot facility in Glendale, over 100 men and men and women learn to perform a wide variety of skills that enable them to gain employment.

Gompers Vocational Program assists those individuals looking to further their employability skills through three avenues:

  • Vocational Training Center
  • Enclaves
  • Community Placement

The Vocational Training Center allows an individual to explore their vocational interests in a supportive environment that encourages growth and mentorship
all while doing real work for real money.

The jobs learned at our facility include tasks such as light assembly work making components for local business, packaging food and medical products and running automatic wrapping lines preparing customers products for shipment to locations across the nation as well as Europe. Over the course of a year these men and women have the opportunity to work on and develop a variety of skills with the wide range of different jobs our center offers.

The next tier is our enclave or outside assisted work program. The clients are evaluated on a regular basis to determine their strengths and their interests. Additional assistance and services are provided to help individuals increase these abilities in and out of the workplace. Gompers trained management staff looks for assisted employment positions in the community that match the clients' focus. Once an appropriate position has been found, a team of clients and a trained Gompers staff person begin to work at the place of business. Transportation, supervision and assistance are given to the client throughout the day in this supported program.

The third tier sets the stage for community placement. Once the client demonstrates sufficient skills at the job and is able to work independently, Gompers assists in locating a position in the community for the individual. In many cases the supported position becomes permanent. The client begins to handle all their own needs to maintain and perform their job. Gompers specially trained staff continues to work with them as they acclimate to their new opportunity by meeting with them at the job site. In the beginning there may be four or more visits a week until the client gets settled and feels comfortable. As this happens the supportive visits lessen as the client's confidence builds, however visits are still made weekly or as needed.
